about

Traditional arr. Mary Beth Carty

Now we return to Chéticamp with this song from the Père Anselme collection. I learned it from Robert Deveaux during a research trip to the Madeleine Islands in March 2019 with flutist Éveline Ménard. That winter, the ice in the Northumberland Strait was so thick that the ferry was rerouted to depart from North Sydney rather than PEI. It was incredible to sail up the east coast of Cape Breton in the winter. Recording this song was fun too, with vocals and handclaps tracked in Sydney at Carter Chiasson’s studio. So happy to have Pastelle Leblanc of Vishtèn and Simon and Kim of The Two Birdz singing along too!

lyrics
