Lors d’une visite aux Nova Scotia Archives, j’ai trouvé un enregistrement dont je suis tombée absolument amoureuse. Le chanteur sur cette bande sonore était Peter Chiasson de St-Joseph-de-Moine, île du Cap-Breton, dont l’interprétation a été enregistrée par la folkloriste Helen Creighton le 6 juin 1944. Cette chanson, c’était « Bon Garçon » (ou « Roulons là ») et j'ai rapidement commencé à chanter dans le cadre de mes concerts, a capella, accompagnée seulement des os, et c'est devenu l'une de mes chansons préférées.

Un soir, j'étais sur scène durant un spectacle avec la pianiste Hilda Chiasson, qui me dit que le chanteur, Peter Chiasson, était en effet son grand-père! Ç’a donc été très naturel pour moi de lui demander de jouer du piano sur l’enregistrement. Je suis également honorée d'avoir eu la permission de la famille Chiasson ainsi que de la famille de Helen Creighton d'inclure un court extrait de la voix inspirante de Peter Chiasson à la fin de cet enregistrement.

Nicole Deveau, qui se joint à moi au voix, est une cousine d'Hilda et de son grand-père. Nicole est une musicienne et éducatrice douée. Je suis ravie de collaborer avec elle sur cet enregistrement !

Les deux autres musiciens invités sont Bradley Murphy au bodhràn et Colin Grant au violon. Tous les trois, c'est que nous sommes des anglophones bilingues avec un grand amour pour la langue française et la culture acadienne!

Cette chanson, bien qu’elle soit originaire de la France, a voyagé en Amérique du Nord, tant bien qu’elle a adopté différentes mélodies et variations de paroles un peu partout. Selon la folkloriste Danielle Martineau, il s'agit d'une chanson de foulerie (une « Òran luaidh » en gaélique). Traditionnellement, ce type de chanson aurait été chanté par les femmes pendant qu'elles travaillaient. De telles chansons se trouvent autant dans la culture gaélique que la culture acadienne.

I stumbled upon a recording of this song during a visit to the Nova Scotia Archives and fell in love with it. The singer on the tape was Peter Chiasson of St-Joseph-de-Moine, Cape Breton Island. Folklorist Helen Creighton recorded him there on June 6th, 1944. I soon began singing “Bon Garçon” (or “Roulons là”) as part of my live shows, a-capella with the bones, and it became one of my favorites.

One night I was on stage with piano player Hilda Chiasson, and she informed me that the singer on that tape, Peter Chiasson, is her grandfather! I am honoured to have Hilda on piano for this recording. I am equally honoured to have the permission of the Chiasson family as well as the estate of Helen Creighton to include a short snippet of Peter Chiasson’s inspiring voice at the end of this recording.

Nicole Deveau, who joins me on vocals, is a cousin of Hilda and a relative of Peter. Nicole is an incredible musician and educator from Chéticamp. I am so glad to collaborate with her on this recording!

The two other guest musicians here are Bradley Murphy on bodhran and Colin Grant on fiddle. We are all bilingual anglophones with a love for French language and culture!

This song originated in France and is found with different melodies and variations of lyrics all around North America. According to folklorist Danielle Martineau, this is a Milling or Waulking Song. These types of songs were sung by women as they worked, and are also prevalent in Gaelic Culture. In French they are called “chansons de foulerie” or “chansons à foulage.”
