about

Friendship Song (Traditional) | Memories of Albert Toney (Mary Beth Carty)

The traditional name for Cape Breton is Unama'ki, “Land of Fog.” It is important to me to include a Mi’kmaq song and not just music from settler cultures. I learned this song from Tara Lewis, who learned it from her mother June (Lafford) Lewis of Eskasoni. I asked Jeff Ward at Membertou Heritage Park if it would be ok for me to include this song and followed his suggestions. Jeff says this song originates with the Cherokee. I made a tune in honor of Morgan’s uncle Albert Toney, of We'koqma'q to follow.
